  1. · Conflict episode

    Rhodesian Bush War begins, 1966

    ZANU (led by Robert Mugabe, armed wing ZANLA) and ZAPU (led by Joshua Nkomo, armed wing ZIPRA) waged a guerrilla war against the white-minority Rhodesian government following the 1965 Unilateral Declaration of Independence.

    Significance here: The armed struggle whose eventual stalemate led to the Lancaster House negotiations.

  2. · Agreement

    Lancaster House Agreement, 1979

    A conference at Lancaster House in London produced agreement on a constitution, ceasefire and transitional arrangements for an independent Zimbabwe, with Britain resuming direct administration pending elections.

    Significance here: The negotiated settlement that ended the guerrilla war and set the terms for internationally recognised independence.

  3. · Election

    Southern Rhodesian general election, 1980

    Under British administration and Lancaster House arrangements, Southern Rhodesia held elections from 14 February to 4 March 1980, in which the Zimbabwe African National Union – Patriotic Front, led by Robert Mugabe, won a majority of seats.

    Significance here: The election that produced the government which led Zimbabwe to independence.

    Independence of Zimbabwe, 1980

    Zimbabwe became independent at midnight on 18 April 1980, at a ceremony in Salisbury (later Harare) attended by Prince Charles, at which Robert Mugabe took office as the country's first Prime Minister.

    Significance here: The formal end of British administration following the Lancaster House settlement and 1980 election.

  5. · Recognition

    Admission of Zimbabwe to the United Nations, 1980

    Following the Security Council's recommendation, the General Assembly admitted the Republic of Zimbabwe as the 153rd member of the United Nations.
