Using the atlas

The atlas is a free reference. You may read, link to and cite it. When citing, please link to the page and give the date on which you consulted it, because histories and status explainers are revised.

Accuracy

Every published page has been reviewed, and every factual paragraph is cited, but historical and political knowledge changes and errors are possible. Status explainers describe the documented position on the date shown. Nothing on the site is legal advice or a statement about the legal status of any territory.

Sources and third-party material

Source records describe and link to works owned by others. Those works remain subject to their owners’ terms. Images and map data carry their own rights information where shown.

Automated access

A public read-only API is provided for published data with rate limits. Please do not attempt to bypass limits or collect the site in bulk through normal page requests.
