This notice describes the service as it is currently built. The site owner must review it before launch and whenever analytics, advertising, email or other services are added.

Reading the atlas

Reading pages does not require an account and does not set cookies. The atlas does not use third-party analytics, advertising trackers, social-media embeds or externally hosted fonts or maps; all assets are served from this site. The atlas does not profile readers or infer political beliefs from the pages they read.

To improve the site we keep a small set of privacy-preserving, aggregate measures: daily counts of how many times each type of page was viewed, how often the map, citations and onward links were used, and which searches returned nothing. These counts are stored without cookies, without your IP address and without any identifier, so they cannot be tied to you or any individual, and they are never used to build advertising audiences. If your browser sends a Do-Not-Track or Global Privacy Control signal, your interactions are not counted at all.

Like any website, the hosting provider’s servers record technical request logs (such as IP address, time and requested address) for security and operation.

Correction suggestions

If you use the correction form, we store the page address, your message, any source you give, and your email address only if you choose to provide one. To limit spam we store a keyed one-way hash of your IP address rather than the address itself. Submissions are kept for up to 365 days and then deleted, unless they led to a published correction, in which case the correction note (without your details) remains. The form sets a session cookie, which is necessary to protect it against forged submissions.

Staff accounts

Editorial staff sign in with accounts protected by passwords, rate limiting and two-factor authentication. Their actions are recorded in a private audit log.
