Independence of Zimbabwe, 1980
Zimbabwe became independent at midnight on 18 April 1980, at a ceremony in Salisbury (later Harare) attended by Prince Charles, at which Robert Mugabe took office as the country's first Prime Minister.
What happened
Zimbabwe became independent from the United Kingdom at midnight on 18 April 1980, according to the scholarly reference work Encyclopedia of African History; Robert Mugabe, whose ZANU-PF had won the February–March 1980 election, took office as Prime Minister.[1]
