Abd el-Krim declared an independent Republic of the Rif, defeated five years later by French and Spanish forces.
2016-2018: the Hirak Rif movement
The Hirak Rif movement began in October 2016 following Mouhcine Fikri's death, a distinct socioeconomic rights campaign.[2]
Nasser Zefzafi was arrested in May 2017 and sentenced to 20 years in June 2018.[3]
