Abd el-Krim declared an independent Republic of the Rif, defeated five years later by French and Spanish forces.
What happened
On 18 September 1921, Abd el-Krim declared the Republic of the Rif; it was defeated by French and Spanish forces, with his surrender on 26 May 1926.[1]

Claim: On 18 September 1921, following a coalition revolt of Riffian and Jebala fighters against Spanish colonial forces in the Rif War, Abd el-Krim declared the independent Republic of the Rif and established governing institutions; the republic was defeated by combined French and Spanish military forces, and Abd el-Krim surrendered on 26 May 1926, ending the republic's existence.
