Current position
New Caledonia remains a special collectivity of France. The Bougival Accord, which proposed a "State of New Caledonia," collapsed after losing FLNKS support and being rejected by the French National Assembly on 2 April 2026, cancelling its planned referendum. Provincial assembly elections are required before 28 June 2026, and the territory's constitutional future remains unresolved.[1]
