The Azerbaijan People's Government, 1945-1946
The Azerbaijani Democratic Party, led by Ja'far Pishevari, seized control of Iranian Azerbaijan's administration by 21 November 1945, proclaiming the Soviet-backed Azerbaijan People's Government on 20 November 1945.[1]
Following a 13 June 1946 agreement and the entry of Iranian forces into Tabriz on 11-12 December 1946, the government collapsed and its leaders fled to the Soviet Union.[2]

Chehregani, the 1996 annulment, and GAMOH
In the 1996 Iranian legislative election, Mahmudali Chehregani won a parliamentary seat representing Tabriz; Iran's Council of Guardians annulled the results without explanation, prompting demonstrations by as many as 40,000 people, dispersed by security forces, which detained more than 600 people.[3]
Chehregani subsequently founded the Southern Azerbaijan National Awakening Movement (GAMOH), was arrested in December 1999, imprisoned for six months in 2000 (recognized by Amnesty International as a "prisoner of conscience"), and has lived in exile in the United States since 2002.[4]

The 2006 cockroach cartoon protests
On 12 May 2006, the government-run newspaper Iran published a cartoon depicting a cockroach responding in the Azerbaijani language; the cartoon triggered several days of large protests across predominantly Azerbaijani-populated Iranian cities. The Iranian government acknowledged 4 protester deaths and 330 detentions, while Amnesty International and Azerbaijani advocacy sources reported substantially higher figures.[5]
