What happened
In the 1996 Iranian legislative election, Mahmudali Chehregani won a parliamentary seat representing Tabriz; Iran's Council of Guardians annulled the results in Tabriz and several other cities without providing a reason, prompting demonstrations by as many as 40,000 people in Tabriz, dispersed by security forces, which detained more than 600 people according to local press reports.[1]
