Current position

No independent Azawad state exists; northern Mali remains contested amid active conflict following Mali's January 2024 termination of the 2015 Algiers Accords. The Azawad Liberation Front, formed in 2025, continued armed activity against Malian and allied Russian-linked forces as of mid-2025.[1]

    Claim: In early 2025, the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) was founded as a merger of several Tuareg rebel groups that had fought the Malian government since 2012; on 13 June 2025, FLA fighters attacked Malian soldiers and allied forces near Anoumalane in rural Kidal Region. Around this period, Russia reorganised the Wagner Group's regional activities under the Russian state-run Africa Corps, following significant Wagner personnel losses in the region.
