   Claim: The Norfolk Island Act 1979 established the Norfolk Island Legislative Assembly, first elected on 10 August 1979, granting the island a limited form of self-government.

   Claim: The Norfolk Island Legislation Amendment Act 2015, passed by the Australian Parliament on 14 May 2015 and assented on 26 May 2015, abolished this self-government, transferring the island into New South Wales local-government law from July 2016 (replacing the Legislative Assembly with a Regional Council) and removing recognition of the special position of Pitcairn descendants, who had settled the island from Pitcairn Island in 1856.

   Claim: Norfolk Island People for Democracy (NIPD), established in 2015, campaigns to restore Norfolk Island's self-government — not independent statehood — and has petitioned the UN Decolonisation Committee and Human Rights Council since 2016 to have Norfolk Island added to the UN list of Non-Self-Governing Territories under Article 73e of the UN Charter; NIPD reports over 1,000 supporters within a community of about 1,800.
