   Claim: Alfred Marie-Jeanne, together with Garcin Malsa, Lucien Veilleur and Marc Pulvar, founded the organisation "La Parole au Peuple" in 1973, which became the Martinican Independence Movement (MIM) on 1 July 1978, seeking the decolonization and independence of Martinique from France; MIM had only limited electoral success until the 1990s.

2. 2.

   Claim: Alfred Marie-Jeanne served as mayor of the commune of Rivière-Pilote from 1971 to 2000, as President of the Regional Council of Martinique from 20 March 1998 to 22 March 2010, and as the first President of the Executive Council of the Territorial Collectivity of Martinique from 18 December 2015 until his party was voted out in 2021, exercising these roles within the existing French institutional framework for Martinique rather than through an active secession campaign in office.

   Claim: In a New Year's message on 31 December 2024, Alfred Marie-Jeanne called for a self-determination referendum on Martinican independence, saying he sincerely wished "that we stop prevaricating."
