Current position

Following the fall of the Assad government in December 2024, Kurdish-led SDF forces and Syria's transitional government agreed in March 2025 and again in January 2026 to integrate Kurdish civil and military institutions into the Syrian state; on 21 August 2026, SDF commander Mazloum Abdi announced that integration was complete, with the next phase focused on securing Kurdish rights within Syria's constitution.[1]
