Current position
No Kurdish autonomous or federal entity exists within Iran. Both major armed episodes covered in this bundle, the 1979-1983 Kurdistan War and the 1989-1996 KDPI insurgency, ended in suppression, and Iranian Kurdish nationalist parties operate mainly in exile from Iraqi Kurdistan. A further, still-unfolding crisis began in 2026, whose outcome this bundle does not assess given contested and partly unverified reporting.[1][2]

Claim: Ghassemlou's assassination triggered a renewed KDPI insurgency against Iranian forces from 13 July 1989; his successor as KDPI Secretary-General, Sadegh Sharafkandi, was himself assassinated along with two colleagues in Bonn, Germany, on 17 September 1992, by gunmen believed to be working for Iran. The conflict, described as having claimed hundreds of lives (with one source cited in the Wikipedia article reporting a range of approximately 172-554 killed), ended when KDPI members announced on 4 August 1996 that they would stop cross-border attacks from Iraq into Iran.

Claim: Beginning around 5 January 2026, Iranian Kurdish parties called for a general strike amid renewed nationwide Iranian protests, with some Kurdish groups later reporting armed operations; on 22 February 2026, five major Iranian Kurdish parties formed a coalition described as the Coalition of Political Forces of Iranian Kurdistan, stating aims including Kurdish self-determination.
