Current position
Kashmir's ultimate political status remains internationally disputed and unresolved. India administers Jammu and Kashmir as a Union Territory pending a promised but not-yet-completed restoration of statehood, following the 2019 abrogation of its special constitutional status and the 2023 Supreme Court ruling upholding that change. Pakistan and various Kashmiri political organisations continue to dispute India's position, with Kashmiri organisations themselves differing between calls for independence (the JKLF) and calls for accession to Pakistan (other Hurriyat-affiliated groups).[1][2]

Claim: The Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) is a secular nationalist organisation committed to independence for the entire former princely state of Jammu and Kashmir from both India and Pakistan, and has invoked the right to self-determination under UN Security Council Resolution 47; this position is distinct from other Kashmiri political and armed groups, including some associated with the Hurriyat umbrella, that have instead sought accession of Indian-administered Kashmir to Pakistan.
