Current position
Kabylia remains part of Algeria, administered as several provinces. The MAK, designated a terrorist organization by Algeria since 2021, symbolically proclaimed a "Federal Republic of Kabylia" in Paris in December 2025, a proclamation not internationally recognized and not reflecting a change in Kabylia's actual status within Algeria.[1]

Claim: On 14 December 2025, the MAK proclaimed the independence of a "Federal Republic of Kabylia" at a ceremony held in central Paris, after a planned venue at the Palace of Versailles was banned by local authorities; MAK president Ferhat Mehenni, introduced as president of the proclaimed republic, addressed the gathering, which included parliamentarians and activists from several countries. The date was chosen to reference the 14 December 1960 UN General Assembly Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples. This bundle does not treat this symbolic proclamation, made outside Kabylia by an exile-based organisation, as an internationally recognized act of statehood or as changing Kabylia's status within Algeria.
