Current position
The Gorkhaland Territorial Administration continues to provide autonomous administration over the Darjeeling and Kalimpong hills within West Bengal, short of separate statehood. The underlying Gorkhaland statehood demand remains unresolved and has periodically resurfaced, most recently in the 2017 agitation.[1][2]

Claim: In 2011, the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM), led by Bimal Gurung, signed an agreement with the West Bengal state government (then led by Mamata Banerjee) to replace the DGHC with the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA), which became functional in August 2012 following its first election, with Gurung as its first chief executive.
