Current position
Dagestan is an ordinary republic of the Russian Federation. Both major episodes of contested political status covered in this bundle, the 1919-1921 Emirate and uprising and the 1998-1999 Kadar zone and war, ended in suppression, and this bundle does not document an ongoing organized movement for Dagestani independence as of 2026.[1]

Claim: On 7 August 1999, the Islamic International Peacekeeping Brigade, led by Shamil Basayev and Ibn al-Khattab and numbering roughly 1,500-2,000 fighters, invaded Dagestan from Chechnya; on 10 August 1999, the invaders proclaimed an "independent Islamic State of Dagestan." Russian and Dagestani forces recaptured all occupied villages by 13 September 1999, and remaining militant forces were pushed back into Chechnya by 14 September 1999, ending major combat operations, including the suppression of the Kadar zone enclave.
