Buryatia is an ordinary republic of the Russian Federation, governed under its 1994 constitution; its executive has been titled "Head of the Republic" since 2012.[1][2]

Claim: As a sovereign republic within the Russian Federation, Buryatia adopted its own Constitution in 1994, along with its own legislative and executive bodies; the Constitution establishing the presidency took effect on 1 July 1994, when Leonid Potapov took office as the republic's first President.
