Current international position

Abkhazia functions as a de facto independent state, recognized by Russia and a small number of other UN member states since 2008, while Georgia and the great majority of the international community continue to regard it as part of Georgia's sovereign territory. The UN General Assembly continues to adopt annual resolutions on the status of Abkhazian refugees and IDPs.[1]

    Claim: On 15 May 2008, UN General Assembly Resolution 62/249 recognized the right of return of all refugees and internally displaced persons and their descendants, regardless of ethnicity, to Abkhazia, and called for a timetable for their prompt voluntary return.
