Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus declaration, 1983

Turkish Cypriot authorities declared an independent state in northern Cyprus; the UN Security Council swiftly declared the declaration legally invalid.

What happened

On 15 November 1983, Turkish Cypriot authorities issued a declaration purporting to create an independent state, the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" (TRNC), in the northern part of Cyprus.[1] On 18 November 1983, the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 541 by 13 votes to 1 (Pakistan against), with 1 abstention (Jordan), deploring the declaration as a "purported secession," considering it "legally invalid," calling for its withdrawal, and calling on all states not to recognise any Cypriot state other than the Republic of Cyprus.[2][3]

On 11 May 1984, the Council adopted Resolution 550 by the same margin (13-1, Pakistan against, with the United States abstaining), reaffirming Resolution 541, condemning the purported exchange of ambassadors between Turkey and Turkish Cypriot authorities, and reiterating that states should not recognise or assist the TRNC.[4][5]
