1948 war and the Nakba

Israel's declaration of independence and the ensuing war resulted in the mass displacement of Palestinian Arabs, an event central to Palestinian national memory and the refugee question.

What happened

Israel declared independence on 14 May 1948; the following war between Israel and neighbouring Arab states, and the events surrounding it, resulted in the displacement of Palestinian Arabs, with estimates ranging from approximately 520,000 to 1,000,000 and general consensus the true figure exceeded 600,000 and likely reached around 700,000.[1] UN General Assembly Resolution 194 (III), adopted 11 December 1948, addressed the resulting refugee question.[2]
