General-reference encyclopedia article, consulted via citation, on the Platt Amendment of 1901, which conditioned the withdrawal of US troops from Cuba on provisions including a unilateral US right of intervention and negotiation of a naval base at Guantánamo Bay, and on the 29 May 1934 Treaty of Relations, which abrogated most of the 1903 Permanent Treaty embodying the Amendment while preserving the legality of prior US occupation actions and the Guantánamo Bay lease.
