Independent historical research report, consulted via citation, on General Valeriano Weyler's reconcentration policy during the 1895-1898 Cuban War of Independence, citing an 1898 Spanish government census estimate of up to 170,000 Cuban deaths from disease, maltreatment and starvation in the camps, Cuban demographic estimates in the range of 95,000-170,000, and higher contemporary American estimates (a 1897 congressional fact-finding mission reporting roughly 300,000 deaths among 500,000 reconcentrados); no single figure is treated as authoritative.
