Editorial annotation
Advocacy-organisation reporting, presented as one characterization rather than neutral fact, on the ICJ's 26 January 2024 provisional measures order in South Africa v. Israel (Application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide). The order found South Africa's claim that Palestinians in Gaza have a right to protection from genocide "plausible" for the purposes of provisional measures, and ordered Israel to take measures to prevent genocidal acts and enable humanitarian aid, without ordering a ceasefire; this is a provisional measures order in ongoing contentious proceedings, not a final merits judgment on whether genocide has occurred, which the Court has not yet issued as of this bundle's preparation.
