Union of Zanzibar and Tanganyika, 1964
Following a revolution, Zanzibar united with Tanganyika to form Tanzania under a semi-autonomous arrangement.
What happened
Following Zanzibar's December 1963 independence and January 1964 revolution, the Articles of Union were signed 22 April 1964, and Zanzibar joined Tanganyika to form Tanzania on 26 April 1964.[1]

Claim: Zanzibar achieved independence as a Commonwealth member on 10 December 1963; in January 1964, the Zanzibari government was overthrown in a revolution and a republic proclaimed. On 22 April 1964, Julius Nyerere and Abeid Amani Karume signed the Articles of Union, and on 26 April 1964, Zanzibar joined Tanganyika to form the United Republic of Tanzania. This bundle does not narrate the January 1964 revolution's violence in detail.
