Moroccan and Frente POLISARIO proposals, 2007
Morocco proposed autonomy under its sovereignty; the Frente POLISARIO proposed a referendum including independence as an option.
What happened
At the Security Council’s request both parties submitted proposals in 2007.[1] Morocco proposed an autonomous Sahara region within its sovereignty, with an autonomy statute to be put to a referendum.[2] The Frente POLISARIO proposed a referendum offering independence, integration or self-governance, with guarantees for Morocco if independence resulted.[3] Talks in 2007–2010 made no progress on core issues.[1]
