Declaration of the Wa State Government Special Administrative Region, 2009
The UWSA formally declared its autonomous administration, without declaring independence from Myanmar.
What happened
On 1 January 2009, the UWSA-administered territory was formally declared the "Wa State Government Special Administrative Region," without a formal declaration of independence.[1]

Claim: Myanmar's government designated the area under UWSA control as Shan State "Special Region 2," within which Wa leaders established their own regional administration largely free from central government interference; on 1 January 2009, this territory was formally declared the "Wa State Government Special Administrative Region." The UWSA has not made a formal declaration of independence from Myanmar, instead maintaining what has been widely described as de facto autonomous or quasi-independent status.
