Claim: On 14 May 1976, the Tamil United Liberation Front, under S. J. V. Chelvanayakam, adopted the Vaddukoddai Resolution near Vaddukoddai in Sri Lanka's Northern Province, the first formal call by a major Sri Lankan Tamil political party for an independent "Free, Sovereign, Secular Socialist State of Tamil Eelam," superseding earlier Tamil demands limited to devolution or federal power-sharing.
