UN Transitional Administration in East Timor, 1999–2002

The Security Council placed East Timor under a UN transitional administration with full legislative and executive authority.

What happened

Six days after Indonesia’s People’s Consultative Assembly recognised the result, the Security Council established UNTAET with overall responsibility for administering East Timor.[1][2] A Constituent Assembly elected on 30 August 2001 approved a constitution on 22 March 2002, and Xanana Gusmão was elected president in April.[3][4]
