UN Security Council Resolution 1244, 1999
The UN Security Council established international civil and security administration of Kosovo, providing for substantial autonomy pending a political settlement of its final status.
What happened
On 10 June 1999, the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 1244, acting under Chapter VII of the UN Charter.[1] The Resolution authorised the deployment of international civil and security presences in Kosovo to provide interim administration, decided that the international civil presence should establish provisional democratic self-governing institutions under which the people of Kosovo could enjoy "substantial autonomy" within the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, and provided that a political process would determine Kosovo's future status.[2] It also reaffirmed the commitment of all Member States to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.[3]
