UN non-member observer state status, 2012
The UN General Assembly upgraded Palestine's status to non-member observer state, a status akin to the Holy See's.
What happened
The International Court of Justice issued an advisory opinion on 9 July 2004, affirmed in subsequent UN General Assembly resolutions as finding that the Palestinian territory occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem, remains under military occupation and that the Palestinian people have the right to self-determination and sovereignty over their territory.[1]
On 29 November 2012, UN General Assembly Resolution 67/19 accorded Palestine non-member observer state status, reaffirming the Palestinian people's right to self-determination and independence, and noting that 132 UN member states had by then recognized the State of Palestine.[2]

Claim: On 29 November 2012, UN General Assembly Resolution 67/19 accorded Palestine non-member observer state status in the United Nations, reaffirming the Palestinian people's right to self-determination and to independence in a State of Palestine on the territory occupied since 1967, and noting that, as of that date, 132 UN member states had recognized the State of Palestine; the resolution was adopted with a reported 138 states in favour, 9 against and 41 abstaining.
