The princely state of Tripura formally merged into India under a queen regent whose legitimacy some Tripuri nationalists later disputed.
What happened
The princely state of Tripura acceded to the Indian Union on 13 August 1947; on 9 September 1949, Queen Regent Kanchan Prava Devi signed the Tripura Merger Agreement, taking effect 15 October 1949. Some Tripuri nationalist groups have since characterized this merger as having occurred "under duress."[1]
