What happened
Following a 2024-2025 factional dispute within the TPLF, Tigray's regional council was reinstated in May 2026 and elected Debretsion Gebremichael as president; the federal government extended the Interim Administration's mandate by a year on 8 April 2026.[1][2]

Claim: From 2024, a factional dispute emerged within the TPLF between chairman Debretsion Gebremichael and Getachew Reda, then head of Tigray's Interim Regional Administration; in October 2024, the Debretsion-led TPLF announced the removal of Getachew and four other administration members, and by early 2025 senior Tigrayan military figures moved to dissolve and restructure the interim administration, describing it as ineffective. In February 2025, Ethiopia's National Election Board suspended the TPLF for three months for failing to hold a required general assembly, and Getachew was formally replaced as interim administration head by Lieutenant General Tadesse Werede.
