In March 1959, an uprising in Lhasa against Chinese rule was suppressed; the Dalai Lama fled into exile, arriving in India on 19 March 1959, and both sides subsequently repudiated the 1951 Agreement.[1]

Claim: In March 1959, a Tibetan uprising against Chinese rule in Lhasa was suppressed, with independent and Tibetan-exile sources reporting substantial loss of life during the events, figures not independently verified here; the 14th Dalai Lama fled into exile, arriving in India on 19 March 1959, where he subsequently issued a statement that the 1951 Agreement had been signed under duress. Both the Tibetan government-in-exile and the Chinese government subsequently repudiated the Agreement, and cooperation under its terms effectively ended with the Dalai Lama's exile.
