Tatarstan sovereignty referendum, 1992
Voters approved a sovereign status for Tatarstan following the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
What happened
In August 1990, the Supreme Soviet of the Tatar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic adopted a declaration of state sovereignty without agreement from Moscow, omitting any reference to Tatarstan being a constituent part of the RSFSR or USSR.[1] Following the Soviet Union's dissolution, a referendum held in March 1992 found 62% of voters in favour of a sovereign status for Tatarstan against 38% opposed; Tatarstan subsequently adopted a new constitution declaring it a "sovereign democratic state" and a "subject of international law."[2]
