Tatarstan presidential title abolished, 2023
Tatarstan renamed its head of state from "President" to "Rais," ending the last use of that title by a Russian regional leader.
What happened
In December 2022, Tatarstani lawmakers voted to rename the head of the republic from "President" to "Rais" (an Arabic-derived title for "leader"), amending the republic's constitution.[1] Rustam Minnikhanov signed the amendments into law on 26 January 2023, with the change taking effect by 6 February 2023, sooner than a previously envisaged transition to the end of his term in 2025; this ended the use of the title "President" by any regional leader in Russia, of which Tatarstan's had been the last.[2]
