South Sudan was proclaimed an independent state on 9 July 2011, the scheduled end of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement's Interim Period.
What happened
The Republic of South Sudan was established on 9 July 2011 upon its proclamation as an independent state, as recorded by the UN Security Council in the resolution establishing the UN Mission in the Republic of South Sudan (UNMISS) that same day.[1]
