Security Council resolution 2797 on Western Sahara, 2025
The Security Council renewed MINURSO and backed negotiations on the basis of Morocco’s autonomy proposal, with a solution providing for self-determination.
What happened
The Council extended MINURSO to 31 October 2026, called on the parties to negotiate without preconditions “taking as basis Morocco’s Autonomy Proposal”, and affirmed that genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could be a most feasible solution, while referring to a solution that provides for self-determination.[1] The vote was 11 in favour, with three abstentions and Algeria not voting.[2]
