Completion of SDF integration into the Syrian state, 2026
After renewed clashes and a further agreement in early 2026, the SDF commander announced the completion of Kurdish-led forces' integration into Syrian state institutions.
What happened
Following clashes between Syrian transitional government forces and the SDF in early 2026, a renewed agreement was reached in January 2026, followed on 16 January 2026 by a decree from President Ahmed al-Sharaa recognizing Kurds as an integral part of the Syrian people and recognizing Kurdish as a national language; Kurdish officials were subsequently appointed to state positions.[1]
On 21 August 2026, Mazloum Abdi announced that the integration of SDF-led military, security and administrative institutions into Syrian state institutions was complete, indicating that the next phase would focus on securing Kurdish rights within Syria's constitution.[2]
