SDF-Damascus integration agreement, 2025
Following the fall of the Assad government, Syria's new leadership and the SDF agreed to integrate Kurdish-led institutions into the Syrian state in exchange for recognition of Kurdish rights.
What happened
On 8 December 2024, the Assad government in Syria was overthrown by a rebel alliance led by Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham; Bashar al-Assad fled to Russia, where he was granted asylum.[1]
On 10 March 2025, Syria's interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa and SDF commander Mazloum Abdi reached an agreement to integrate the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces' civilian and military structures into Syrian state institutions by the end of 2025, in exchange for recognition of Kurds as an integral part of Syria with citizenship and political-participation rights; implementation proved slower than the agreed timetable.[2]
