Establishment of Kurdish self-administration in northern Syria, 2012-2014

· Northern Syria

The PYD and allied Kurdish parties established a self-governing administration across three non-contiguous cantons in northern Syria amid the Syrian civil war.

What happened

The Democratic Union Party (PYD) was founded in Syria in 2003 as a Syrian offshoot of the PKK.[1] The Kurdish Supreme Committee, established by the PYD and the Kurdish National Council in July 2012, became the governing body of what came to be called Rojava, the Kurdish-majority region of northern Syria; in November 2013 the PYD announced an interim government divided into three non-contiguous autonomous cantons (Afrin, Jazira and Kobani), with the People's Protection Units (YPG) as its armed wing.[2]
