Claim: Following Japan's surrender in 1945, administration of Taiwan passed to the Republic of China (ROC) government led by the Kuomintang. After its defeat by the Chinese Communist Party in the Chinese Civil War, the ROC government relocated to Taiwan in 1949, the same year the Communist Party proclaimed the People's Republic of China (PRC) on the mainland; the ROC's effective jurisdiction has since been limited to Taiwan and its surrounding islands.
