Claim: On 25 April 1950, South Moluccan leaders, including former East Indonesia justice minister Christiaan Robbert Steven Soumokil, unilaterally declared the independent Republic of South Maluku (RMS) on Ambon and Seram, with Johanis Manuhutu becoming its first president; the declaration followed the breakdown of a December 1949 treaty between the Dutch and Indonesian governments that had stipulated autonomy for constituent states of a federation.
