Declaration of the Republic of Me’ekamui, 1990
After the PNG withdrawal, the BRA and the Bougainville Interim Government declared Bougainville independent as the Republic of Me’ekamui.
What happened
The BRA and its Bougainville Interim Government declared Bougainville independent as the Republic of Me’ekamui on 17 May 1990, with Francis Ona as President and Joseph Kabui as Vice-President.[1] The declaration followed the PNG government’s withdrawal and blockade.[2] Braithwaite and colleagues note that the new republic inherited almost nothing of a working state.[3]
