Operation Blue Star, 1984

An Indian military assault on the Golden Temple complex killed militant leader Bhindranwale and, per disputed estimates, hundreds to thousands of others.

From 1 to 10 June 1984, the Indian Army assaulted the Golden Temple complex to remove Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and armed followers; Bhindranwale was killed by around 7 June.[1]

    Claim: Casualty figures for Operation Blue Star are heavily disputed. The Indian government's official White Paper initially reported 83 military personnel killed (a figure Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi later revised upward to around 700) and stated that at least 493 people were killed overall, including 309 described as Sikh pilgrims. Independent and human-rights estimates have put civilian deaths considerably higher, ranging from roughly 4,712 to over 5,000, with some human-rights organizations estimating total deaths exceeding 10,000; these figures are presented here as attributed estimates from named sources, not as independently verified fact.
