A new militant group significantly disrupted Nigerian oil production, citing autonomy and resource-control demands.
What happened
The NDA, formed in February 2016, conducted a pipeline-attack campaign that reduced Nigerian oil output by roughly a third by May 2016, demanding Niger Delta autonomy and a greater share of oil wealth.[1]

Claim: The Niger Delta Avengers (NDA), a separate and later organisation from MEND, announced its formation in February 2016 and claimed responsibility for a campaign of attacks on oil and gas pipelines and installations; the group stated its demands as Niger Delta autonomy, a greater share of Nigeria's oil wealth for the region, and an end to environmental destruction associated with oil extraction. The NDA was linked to a reduction in Nigeria's oil production from approximately 2.2 million to around 1.4 million barrels per day by the end of May 2016, and to at least 13 claimed attacks between February and June 2016.
