The Naga National Council (NNC) was formed on 2 February 1946 under Angami Zapu Phizo; under his leadership, the NNC declared Naga independence on 14 August 1947, one day before India's own independence, after rejecting an Indian invitation to integrate into the Indian Union.[1]
