What happened
The Movement for the Independence of Sicily (MIS) was founded on 10 July 1943, emerging from a Committee for the Independence of Sicily established in September 1942, seeking Sicilian independence.[1] At an autumn 1944 congress in Taormina, radical members pushed for armed struggle, forming the Volunteer Army for the Independence of Sicily (EVIS); on 17 June 1945, its leader Antonio Canepa was killed in a clash with Italian Carabinieri near Randazzo, prompting the Italian government to deploy troops to the island.[2]
