Claim: The Mautam famine of 1959-1960, caused by a bamboo-flowering-triggered rat population explosion that destroyed crops across the Mizo Hills, prompted the formation of a relief organization, the Mizo National Famine Front, which Mizos felt the Assam state and Indian union governments had responded to inadequately; this organization later transformed, under Laldenga's leadership, into the Mizo National Front (MNF).
